Boruto: What is Rasengan: Uzuhiko?

Boruto has continued Naruto’s trend of introducing exciting new jutsu that are both imaginative and redefine the power structure of the universe. While revelations such as Sarada’s Mangekyo Sharingan are certainly part of this, one technique that remains on fans’ minds is the protagonist’s Rasengan: Uzuhiko.

The Rasengan: Uzuhiko is a new variant of the Rasengan created by Boruto Uzumaki by harnessing planetary chakra. At a time when the threats are at their highest, with antagonists such as Code and the Human God Trees threatening everyone he loves, Boruto has developed this skill to face them.

The Rasengan is arguably the most iconic jutsu in the Naruto universe and was created by Minato Namikaze to protect his wife. This was later passed on from Jiraiya to Naruto Uzumaki, who made the technique his own and came up with several creative varieties.

Examples such as the Rasenshuriken and the Big Ball Rasengan are much more potent forms of Minato’s base version, but they all still require fine control and rotation of the user’s chakra. However, Uzuhiko is notably different.

This version allows the user to absorb planetary chakra, which is taken from the centrifugal force of the planet—generated from its rotation and orbit. To accumulate this chakra, the user must plant both feet firmly on the ground and absorb it directly from the Earth. Additionally, its potency and output depend on how long the user can build up the force.

As Boruto has displayed, this can range from greatly damaging the enemy to destroying them in one blow. Along with using the planetary chakra, the Rasengan Uzuhiko is also the only Rasengan without a fixed form and can deal long-lasting damage to a target.

At the very start of the Two Blue Vortex manga, Boruto could pass on the force generated by the planetary chakra to Code. This completely disoriented the antagonist’s senses and made him unable to function during battle. Soon after, the protagonist explained how Uzuhiko’s effects were semi-permanent and could continuously deal damage to Code. The only way to stop it would be if the jutsu were rescinded or if the planet stopped spinning.

Therefore, the internal disruption it causes would constantly eat away at the target and even affect them psychologically. This is extremely unique in the Naruto universe, where jutsu typically leave a quick and powerful attack. Since the Rasengan: Uzuhiko uses the planet’s energy itself, it can draw limitless power depending on the user’s skill in wielding it.

The significance of the Rasengan: Uzuhiko in Boruto

Boruto Uzumaki had long been foreshadowed as a flagbearer of a new era of the Rasengan, having come up with the distinctive Vanishing Rasengan. The Rasengan: Uzuhiko is the culmination of all his efforts to forge a new path for himself and step outside his lineage’s shadow, though it was ironically created due to the protagonist’s desire to protect them.

Uzuhiko’s literal definition is “Vortex Prince”, which fits the protagonist of Two Blue Vortex. The power itself also resembles a vortex of wind, and Boruto says it is the planet’s way of fighting back against the Otsutsukis, who are known as planet-killers.

There are also theories on how Uzuhiko is derived from Japanese mythology and refers to another name of the God of Wind, Shinatsuhiko. This is not new in the Naruto universe, as there are countless mythological elements such as the Nine-Tailed Fox, Amaterasu, and the Susanoo.

Hence, Boruto wielding this power, which is inspired by a god and uses the planet’s limitless powers, signifies the importance of his role in Two Blue Vortex, where both Naruto and Sasuke are out of action. He has already shown his expertise in controlling it, defeating Code since the beginning of the manga and dealing a devastating blow to the Human God Tree Hidari.
