Boruto, the sequel to the beloved Naruto franchise, is a series that has gotten mixed reactions ever since its conception. However, it features several standout moments that stun the entire fan fanbase. The most prominent among these is the “death” of Naruto Uzumaki.
As the seventh Hokage, Naruto’s life has been far from peaceful in his son’s story. In a flashforward sequence in the very first chapter of the manga, the deuteragonist Kawaki implied that he had killed Naruto during a confrontation with Boruto. From that moment, fans dreaded the future possibility of Naruto dying.
However, his actual fate is much more complex. Naruto Uzumaki is still alive in Boruto, but most characters in the series believe him to be dead. Making things worse, they also believe his son to be responsible for his death.

Naruto’s Fate in Boruto
Naruto Uzumaki, the former protagonist of the Naruto universe, goes on to become the leader of Konoha in the sequel series. He is a role model to the entire village and treats them all akin to family. While this led to initial feelings of inferiority from Boruto, the father-son duo were quick to patch things up.
Naruto’s kindness also extended to potential threats, as he adopted Kawaki, Isshiki’s vessel, into his family. Ever since then, his life was filled with constant danger. Due to Kawaki’s connection with Isshiki and Boruto’s connection with Momoshiki, the Hokage was placed with the burden of facing the celestial Otsutsuki Clan.
During these battles, death seemed imminent several times. Fans believed the end was near when Naruto valiantly displayed his Baryon Mode to beat Isshiki. Thankfully, he survived, though Kurama met his end.

Following this, he took a backseat, and the story focused more on Boruto and Kawaki. While they considered each other to be brothers, there remained unaddressed tensions between the two. This was mainly because Kawaki intensely loved his savior, Naruto. He saw Boruto’s instability in controlling Momoshiki’s power to be a danger to the Hokage and resolved to kill him if necessary.
However, even when fatally harmed, the protagonist could regenerate thanks to Momoshiki’s abilities. Additionally, Kawaki faced the risk of breaking Naruto’s heart by killing his son. Left with no choice, he made his move during the Omnipotence Arc.
Chapter 77 of the manga saw Kawaki interrupt Naruto and Hinata’s dinner while restating how much he cared for the Hokage. After this, he used his Kokugan’s Daikokuten ability to transport the pair to a dimension frozen in time. Naruto and Hinata are currently unconscious and trapped here, though their bodies require no sustenance.

Unfortunately, Kawaki did not stop there. Using Eida’s power of Omnipotence, he swapped the roles of himself and Boruto. This made the entire village believe that Kawaki is Naruto’s son and Boruto is the stranger adopted by the Hokage.
He then forced Eida into making a report stating how Boruto had killed the Hokage. The powers of Omnipotence affect everyone apart from Eida’s blood relatives and those carrying Otsutsuki DNA. Therefore, most of Konoha were influenced to believe Boruto to be Naruto’s murderer and moved to capture him.
The sequel, Two Blue Vortex, is set following a four-year timeskip. It revolves around Boruto Uzumaki’s return to the village after escaping its shinobi in the past. He is still accused of being Naruto’s murderer, though the Hokage is alive and well despite being trapped in Kawaki’s dimension.
