Little by little throughout the story, we learn the Eye of the Midnight Sun isn't comprised of typical villains. Many of them are reincarnated elves, a once-peaceful race of magical beings. Many years ago, the elves were decimated in a horrific incident called the Elf Massacre.

They thought the humans of the Clover Kingdom in Black Clover had betrayed them and were killing them out of jealousy and fear of their powerful magic. As a result, the elves, who now inhabit human bodies, are bent on avenging their fallen brethren.

One of the most intriguing characters from Black Clover is the leader of the group, Licht. Initially, because of the limited view we get of him, we see him as just a powerful enemy who carries a deep hatred of humans. But as time goes on, we learn that he’s not really evil. He is driven by grief, betrayal, and the desire to protect his people.

The person we think is Licht for much of the story turns out to be someone else entirely, a man named Patri who looks really similar to Licht. Patri is another reincarnated elf, and he’s the one leading the Eye of the Midnight Sun in their mission of revenge. His journey from hatred to understanding is one of the emotional highlights of the series.

The Clover Kingdom experiences a ton of havoc due to the actions of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. They raid villages, seize the powerful magic stones, and even try to conquer the kingdom by force. They cause some of the most intense fighting in the Black Clover anime, with the Magic Knights trying desperately to keep them at bay. In battle, Asta and Yuno, and the captains of the Magic Knight squads, are faced with their toughest challenges.

One of the biggest turning points in the story is when the elves were reincarnated. Patri collected all the required magic stones and placed them in the Sephirot. As a result, all the elves that were sealed were reincarnated, including Licht. He is much calmer and wiser than Patri and helps bring peace between the elves and humans. Thanks to the main characters, the elves start to realize that not all of humanity is responsible for their suffering.

Turns out that the massacre was orchestrated by a demon named Zagred. He had spent a long time planting seeds of animosity in humans and made everything look like their fault. When the elves were reincarnated, Licht and Lumiere, the first Wizard King, fought alongside each other to protect the world of Black Clover. Ultimately, with the help of the Magic Knights, Zagred is defeated.
