In the aftermath of the explosion, many of Salem's residents were in danger and in life-threatening situations. Will and E.J. saved Sami's life, and then she decided to run away with E.J. to help prove his innocence. Kayla and Will turned the Brady Pub into a triage center to help care for the injured. Chad and Gabi searched for Melanie and Brady who were trapped and injured after a second explosion. Madison died in Ian's arms. Kate accidentally heard Ian profess his undying love for Madison and that he had only used Kate to get to Stefano. Later, Kate, stinging with hurt from Ian's betrayal, vowed to get her revenge against him for ruining her life. In a moment of anger, Ian admitted to a shocked and disbelieving Kate that the best thing that he had ever done for her was to murder Stefano. Jack died a hero after he saved Abigail. Adrienne, Justin, and Kayla comforted Jennifer and Abigail as they grieved for Jack. Daniel frantically searched for Nicole in the rubble. Later, Daniel and Bo found Nicole wandering in Horton Square. Daniel eventually helped to save Nicole and her baby. Gabi and Chad rescued Melanie and Brady. Melanie was reunited with Daniel and Maggie at the hospital. Gabi almost told Chad her part in Melanie's kidnapping. Kate tried to comfort Brady after she told him that Madison had not survived the explosion, but lessened the shock when she told him that Madison's last words had been that she loved him. John tried to stop Brady from going after Ian. After a talk with Father Matt, Nicole realized that she wanted Daniel in her life. At the same time, Daniel confided to Maggie that he wanted to concentrate on being a better father to Melanie and put his personal life on hold. Lucas told Kate that he was done with Sami. Roman asked Melanie to make a statement to the police. Gabi and Melanie were shocked when Andrew arrived at the Emergency Room, alive and well. At the DiMera safe house, E.J. and Sami kissed and realized that they still had strong feelings for each other.
Todd agreed to make Steve's legal troubles in Memphis go away, provided that Heather remained in Ferncliff and stropped threatening to tell Sam about the baby switch. Sam and Jason decided to end their marriage. Lulu's pregnancy test confirmed that she was pregnant. Lulu and Dante decided not to share the news with anyone until Lulu had a checkup with Dr. Lee. Jerry went to Atlantic City to get his associate, Joe Scully, out of jail. Joe had provided Jerry with the group of mercenaries who had worked for Jerry during the Metro Court hostage crisis, so Jerry wanted Joe to assemble more men to help carry out Jerry's latest plot against Port Charles. Jerry injected Alexis and Josslyn with an unknown toxin. Jason and John decided to look around Wyndemere when they learned that Alexis had been lured there prior to becoming sick. Jason and John became suspicious of Ewen when Ewen showed up at Wyndemere. Steve warned Sam and Carly that there wasn't any known treatment for what was ailing Alexis and Josslyn. Jerry confided to Joe that the injections that Alexis and Josslyn had been given were vaccinations against what Jerry intended to unleash in Port Charles. Trey claimed that his father would have to declare bankruptcy if Trey didn't produce ten episodes of
Mob Princess and marry Kristina during the final episode, to ensure high ratings.

Phyllis blasted Daniel's relationship with Heather. Avery was relieved that Phyllis hired Leslie as her new attorney. Heather and Daniel dated in secret and made love. Lauren was frustrated that Eden's memory was not enough to help Paul. Avery got bail for Paul, and Lauren put up the bond. Cane and Genevieve were the victims of another prank from a woman who hired an actor to play Claude Shirl. Tucker offered to give Genevieve a job to do for him, and agreed to pay her bills. Harmony and Neil had a successful second date. Neil asked Devon to keep at eye on Lily and Cane. Jack tried to surprise Nikki with a honeymoon, but she was compelled to fly off to search for Victor. Jack warned Nikki not to go. Victoria and Nick were convinced that Sharon had burned the prenuptial agreement Victor had required before their marriage, but Sharon denied the existence of the pre-nup. Victoria agreed to return to Newman Enterprises to help Nick keep the company from floundering while Victor was missing. Tucker coached Sharon on how to use Victor's proxy to assume the role of acting CEO of Newman. Tucker masterminded a way to take over Newman Enterprises. In Los Angeles, Victor took day work at a warehouse. In a waterside bar, Victor got into a fistfight with some guys who tried to cheat him in a game of dice. Victor won the fight, but seemed in need of a doctor. Kevin asked Phyllis to be a TagNGrab user to generate publicity for the fledgling website. Billy worried about the
Restless Style TV ratings. Michael threatened to arrest Billy for not revealing his source to the D.A.'s office. Phyllis learned from Avery that Michael planned to depose Tim. Avery warned Phyllis to stay away from Tim. Phyllis lied to Nick and arranged a sexual liaison with Tim to stop him from talking at the deposition. While waiting in the living room for Phyllis to slip into something seductive, Tim overdosed on erectile dysfunction medication and keeled over. Kevin knocked on the door to the penthouse as Phyllis panicked, thinking that Tim was dead.

Hayley told Arlene that she despised Arlene and had never loved her. Ryan and Adrian prepared to go to Chechnya, despite Gillian's pleas to stay. Leo and Becca entered a swing dance contest at SOS after the two had a romantic evening. Wade loaned Greenlee the money she needed for IncredibleDreams.com. Later, Greenlee began to realize that it might have been a mistake. Erica continued her plans for Bianca's party. She warned Edmund to steer clear of Alex.

A look at what was happening the week of August 21, 2000
Reva and Josh clashed over custody of the children when Reva felt Josh's sexual behavior was setting a bad example for Marah and Shane. Josh struck back by reminding Reva of her sordid past -- and that she was afraid Marah would become like her. Billy thought he had Noah where he wanted him until Holly verified Noah's story. Marah took advantage of the situation and decided to make a play for her mom's boyfriend. Harley's family was less than pleased at her reconciliation with Phillip, especially Susan, who felt she wasn't happy with either parent and went to Buzz for support. Blake was devastated that Ross didn't want to marry her, and was rebuffed in her attempt to change his mind. Selena agreed to tell her story to Blake. Maria manipulated Danny and Michelle to her benefit. Rick admitted the truth about his fraudulent past to the hospital board, but later learned he had passed the medical boards and Claire had been lying to him for years. Rick decided she needed help, and made a decision not to implicate her to the board. Richard and Cassie told Dax and Edmund that they could conceive a child and heir. Cassie had a minor accident at the palace that played into part of Edmund's plan.

Asa had a dream that Max was shot. Daniel arranged a meeting with Rae, Sykes, Kevin, Max, and Skye at Crossroads. Todd threatened Skye to stay away from Max. Sophia thought she was falling in love with Antonio. Kelly was shot and rushed to the hospital. Joey blamed Kevin for Kelly getting hurt. Daniel told Rae that Max was her son. Todd threatened to take custody of Starr away from Blair. Will reached Ireland and sent letters to Sam and Jessica. Kelly opened her eyes. Cris refused to let Will talk to Jessica. Melanie informed Lindsay that Bo was returning home. Todd tried to figure out what to do with Nora. Rae told Max that Daniel said Max was her son.

Ivy overheard Ethan and Julian plotting to destroy Sam. Sheridan and Luis almost kissed, but Hank interrupted. Sheridan continued to wonder if she was responsible for the death of Luis' father. Tabitha realized she couldn't control Evil Charity, and she and Timmy needed to obey Evil Charity. Evil Charity had Timmy sabotaged Miguel's motorcycle in an attempt to kill him. The angel girl warned Grace that an event in Sam's son's life was about to change her life. Chad pressured Ethan to call off the wedding and expose his true feelings. Eve hypnotized Sheridan. During the hypnosis, Sheridan screamed, "I did it!" Theresa was devastated when she realized that Ethan was serious when he claimed he didn't love her and would still be marrying Gwen. Distraught, she hopped aboard her brother's motorcycle and rode. Sheridan told Eve that she had killed Luis' father.
