GL, AW, PC actor Marcus Smythe dead at 70

Actor Marcus Smythe (ex-Gordon Middleton, Guiding Light; ex-Peter Love, Another World; ex-Dean Eldridge, Port Charles) has passed away. The Ohio native was 70.

Former soap opera actor Marcus Smythe, who appeared on several daytime shows from the late 1970s to the early 2000s, died on August 20 at the age of 70. He had reportedly been battling brain cancer for the past three years.

A native of Berea, Ohio, Smythe received his B.A. in Theater from Otterbein University in 1972 and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1975. He appeared at the Cleveland Playhouse post-college before he moved to New York City.

Smythe's acting career included many soap opera roles, including Guiding Light's Gordon Middleton (1979), Search for Tomorrow's Dean Taylor (1982-1983), Another World's Peter Love (1985-1987), and Port Charles' Dean Eldridge (2000).

Some of his other television credits included Girlfriends, 7th Heaven, Mad About You, Beverly Hills, 90210, Seinfeld, Who's the Boss, and 3-2-1 Contact.

Smythe also appeared in films with actors like Henry Fonda, Myrna Loy, and Jessica Tandy, and he performed extensively in off-Broadway theatrical productions and national stage tours. He was the recipient of Drama-Logue and LA Weekly Drama Awards during his stage career in Los Angeles. He was also a member of SAG, AFTRA, and Actors Equity.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Goddard; two sons, Harrison and Duncan; brother Casey of Tucson, Arizona; as well as nieces and nephews in Kansas and Arizona. He is preceded in death by parents, Patricia (Schweitzer) and Paul Smythe, and brother Scott.
