Revenge recap: Epitaph (January 4, 2015)

As Emily and Victoria grieve, David springs into action to protect his loved ones.

Previous recap: Intel (November 30)

Victoria and David raced out of the beach house upon hearing gunshots, and he called the police. At Grayson Manor, Jack stared in shock at Emily, who closed Daniel's eyes with her hand. Jack pointed the gun at David and Victoria as they burst in, and Victoria screamed when she saw a lifeless Daniel lying on the floor. Victoria hysterically demanded to know what Emily had done, and Emily stammered that she hadn't expected Daniel to be there. Emily asked David to hold her hand and not let go, and she shoved her dislocated shoulder back into place as Victoria sobbed.

Victoria asked where the ambulance was, especially since Kate had been an FBI agent. Emily explained that Kate had been Malcolm Black's daughter, and David inquired whether Kate had known who Emily was. Emily revealed that Malcolm wanted the money David had taken, and Kate had planned to go after David next. Victoria cradled Daniel's body, and Jack saw a text message on Kate's phone that indicated someone had expected to hear from her. The message ordered Kate to check in or the sender would get involved.

David angrily asked if Emily knew what she'd done, since she'd essentially killed all of them. David divulged that after Malcolm's nephew had been crippled in a drunk-driving accident, the intoxicated driver had disappeared, and the driver's family had later been discovered dead after they'd been tortured for six weeks. Jack numbly stated that he'd killed Kate, but David worried that Malcolm would bury them all. Jack said they'd have to make sure Malcolm didn't find out.

Later, police officers took photos of the scene at the manor, and Detective Adams asked Emily if she was okay to continue with her story. Emily claimed that an angry, drunken Daniel had pounded on the door and had wanted to talk about how she'd ruined his life. She continued that she'd asked him to leave, but he'd refused, and she allowed the detective to assume that she'd called Jack for help. Jack said he hadn't made it in time, and in a flashback, David had thrown a planter through the window to make their story look right. Emily told the detective that Daniel had broken the window.

Emily said she'd tried to escape upstairs, but Daniel had followed her, and they'd struggled until she'd fallen off the balcony. She flashed back to wiping the gun clean of Jack's prints, and Detective Adams asked where Emily had gotten the weapon. Emily said it had belonged to the previous owner, and she'd found it when she'd been moving stuff into the attic. The detective pointed out that Emily had previously referred to moving things into the basement, and a flustered Emily clarified that she'd been moving things from the basement into the attic when she'd found the gun under a floorboard.

Jack informed Emily that he was only able to find over-the-counter medication, but he was sure she could ask the EMTs for something stronger. She declined, and he popped the pills himself. She asked if he would be okay, and he resolved not to think about it until they were out of the woods. He noted that she'd been struggling with the detective's questions, and he suggested that Emily request a break. Ben entered and announced that Detective Adams was done questioning Emily for the night, but he asked Emily to be available the next day.

Ben mused to Jack that it was tough to have to shoot an ex, and he asked if Jack had seen the whole thing. Jack said he'd gotten there at the end, and he wished he'd been quicker to arrive. Ben acknowledged that Emily hadn't had much choice if what she'd said was true, but she'd been shaky about the facts. Jack wondered how shaky Ben would be if he'd had the "crap kicked out" of him, but Ben recognized that Emily was good at playing people, including Ben himself. Ben hoped Emily's story was true, and he said he'd see Jack the next day.

At the beach house, David told Chief Alvarez that Victoria was in no condition to talk, but the chief pointed out that Daniel and Victoria had just seen one another in Manhattan. David sarcastically asked if Alvarez thought it was a good time to have a conversation with a grieving mother about her son's state of mind, and the chief conceded that it could wait. Alvarez asked if the van parked outside was David's, since the keys were still in the rear door. David flashed back to stashing Kate's body in the van, and he remarked that it was a safe neighborhood, but the chief pointed out that it didn't seem like it after what had happened.

After Alvarez left, Victoria chided David for being able to lie that easily, and David countered that he'd done it so she hadn't needed to. She huffed that she wouldn't have, and she questioned what crimes Daniel had committed that had made it necessary to pay with his life and to expect everyone to lie about how he'd died. Victoria snapped that Daniel had given his life for David's daughter, and she'd die before she desecrated Daniel's name. David warned that Malcolm would make them all suffer more than she knew, and she told him to "go to hell," since he'd chosen to send her son there.

The next morning, Jack informed Nolan that Emily was still sleeping, and Nolan disclosed that he'd manipulated the timestamps on Emily's phone to support her story. Nolan added that he'd left a digital trail of breadcrumbs to make it appear as if Kate were on vacation in Miami, but he'd also mined the data from her phone, and he'd obtained FAA locator numbers for all of Malcolm's private planes. He reported that one plane was prepped with no flight plan, and he suggested they meet shortly.

Nolan found Louise outside his front door, and she solemnly asked if he'd heard about Daniel. She hugged Nolan and lamented that she felt alone with nowhere else to go, and she asked if she could stay there to get her bearings. He offered to let her stick around, but he said he had to run out. Louise imagined Victoria was a wreck, and she hustled into the kitchen and babbled about baking something before her Xanax wore off, but she realized Nolan was already gone.

David told Victoria that he needed to go out to take care of the body in the van, and he'd contacted Charlotte's doctor to ensure their daughter's recovery wasn't compromised. Victoria ranted about what Charlotte would think when she heard the lies about her brother's death, and she snapped that she couldn't look at David for another second. He retorted that he'd been a prisoner for two decades because of her, so she could hold on for one more day, and she wondered if she'd overlooked his cruelty 20 years earlier. David snarled that Victoria had betrayed him to keep Daniel alive, and he thought she owed him the same thing. Victoria declared that she wouldn't be responsible for anyone's death, but she intended to mourn her son, and she wouldn't stay there.

David and Victoria arrived at the manor, and David dictated that Victoria would stay there for the time being. Emily and Victoria argued about the arrangement, and David asserted that if they had any hope of getting through it alive, they needed a safe house. He added that he had a body to move to clean up Emily's mess, and Emily became defensive, but David reminded her that she'd disobeyed his instructions to stay out of it. He told the women to play nice as he left, and the ladies glared at one another.

Nolan told Jack he'd checked Kate out of the hotel's reservation database, and he'd created a keycard for her room. Jack said he already had one, but Nolan wanted to avoid any digital evidence that Jack had returned to the room. The men entered Kate's room, and Jack remembered having sex with her. His memories flashed to shooting her, and Nolan called to Jack and asked if he was okay.

Nolan stressed that Kate had intended to kill Emily, and Jack hadn't had any choice. Jack recognized that when he'd taken the job, he'd known there had been a chance he'd have to shoot someone, but Kate hadn't been the person he'd thought she'd been. Nolan promised to do whatever he could to help, but they had to clear the room before the cleaning crew arrived in a matter of minutes. The men packed Kate's things in garbage bags and quickly left.

Margaux arrived at the manor after she'd found the beach house empty, and Victoria lamely claimed that she hadn't been able to be alone. A sobbing Margaux said what she'd heard made no sense, and Victoria replied that it was hard for all of them to accept. Margaux argued that Daniel had been happily committed to turning his life around and spending it with her and their growing family, and Victoria reiterated that she knew Daniel had loved Margaux. Margaux was certain Emily was lying, and she theorized that Emily had lured Daniel to the manor and had killed him in cold blood. As Emily looked down from the balcony, Victoria asserted that Daniel and Emily had never escaped one another, and although she'd always hated Emily, she also believed Emily. Margaux was determined to go to the police without Victoria, and she sauntered off. Victoria looked up at Emily and coldly said, "You're welcome."

Later, Louise dropped off a freshly baked pie to Victoria and explained she'd been taught to deflect her grief with comfort food, and Victoria thanked her. Louise remarked that Daniel had possessed the spirit of compassion and decency, just like his mother, and Victoria was touched. Louise hugged Victoria and offered her condolences, and she fretted that she'd left Nolan's kitchen a mess. Victoria asked if Louise and Nolan were friends, and Louise mentioned that she was staying with him. Victoria invited Louise to sit with her for a bit, and Louise jumped at the chance to be there for Victoria.

As David drove down the road, a police car appeared behind David's van, and David pulled over. Alvarez confronted David and sternly noted that his license was temporary, and David explained that he hadn't had a chance to update it in the chaos of his return. Alvarez made reference to a taillight being out, and David was skeptical, but Alvarez invited him to take a look. David stepped out of the van, and he saw a piece of cloth hanging out of the back.

David peered at the smashed taillight and suspiciously commented that it seemed intentional, and Alvarez commanded him to open the back of the van, since he suspected David was hiding something. David concluded that it was more about Victoria and the fact that she wouldn't give Alvarez the time of day, but Alvarez repeated his order to open the van. David obliged, but all Alvarez found was a blanket in the back. Alvarez handed David back his license and told him to get the light fixed.

David returned to the beach house and washed his hands, and Nolan called to report that Malcolm's plane had just taken off. Louise entered Nolan's house and listened as Nolan indicated that the flight had headed south, but he wouldn't know its destination for a few hours. Louise rifled through a file Nolan had taken from Kate's room, and she pulled out an envelope and left.

Jack asked what Emily was doing outside the police station, and he roughly took her aside. She thought it would look suspicious if he intervened in the investigation, and they bickered. He noted that he had as much to lose as she did, and she assured him that no one had noticed the changes in her answers. Jack warned that she could blow it for all of them, but she swore that she knew what she was doing. He advised her to take a day to get her head together to deal with the trauma, but she told him to worry about himself, since her head was fine.

In an interrogation room, Ben assured Emily that the discrepancies in her story weren't a concern, but the medical examiner's report was another story, since it had shown Daniel hadn't had any alcohol in his system. He offered to run the tests again, but Emily surmised that she'd misjudged Daniel, since he hadn't needed alcohol to get violent or angry. Ben relayed that Margaux had sworn Daniel had been as happy as she'd ever seen him, since he'd been excited to be a father. Emily stared at Ben in shock, and he realized she hadn't known. Emily requested that they take a break, but Ben questioned why Daniel's body hadn't shown any defensive wounds.

Ben noted that Emily seemed to be someone who could hold her own in a fight, and Emily explained that she hadn't wanted to hurt Daniel, so she'd held back when he'd attacked her, but the truth was that she had hurt him. As Jack watched from the other side of the one-way mirror, Emily admitted that she'd married Daniel for the wrong reasons, and the damage she'd caused had been real. Emily contended that underneath Daniel's temper had been a genuinely good man who had just been trying to find his way, and despite their history, she'd cared about him. Ben pointed out that she'd still shot Daniel, and she replied that she'd only done it once she'd realized Daniel had intended to kill her. Emily mentioned that Daniel had tried to kill her before on the night of their wedding, but she'd covered for him.

At the manor, Nolan informed David that Malcolm's plane was just outside of New York airspace, and they'd soon know whether it would land or keep heading south. Emily sincerely told Victoria that she was sorry about Daniel, and Victoria muttered that she knew. Nolan reported that the plane had passed over New York and appeared to be headed for Disney World, and Emily cautioned that it wouldn't be Malcolm's last stop once he didn't find what he was looking for. David hoped it would be Malcolm's final destination, since Malcolm had enemies, and David had tipped off some bloodthirsty cartel leaders that they should visit Miami. The doorbell rang, and Margaux appeared on the security camera.

Emily offered Margaux her condolences and invited her to sit, but Margaux coldly stated that her attorney had informed her that Emily wouldn't be named a suspect in Daniel's murder, since the police had officially determined the shooting had been self-defense. Margaux spat that she knew Emily was lying, and she knew Emily had murdered Daniel. Emily denied it, but Margaux ordered her to stop talking, and she vowed to make it her life's journey to make sure Emily paid for what she'd done.

Margaux announced that Daniel would be buried on Friday, and Emily wouldn't be there. Emily said Margaux couldn't do that, but Margaux pointed out that Victoria could. Margaux stalked out, and Victoria icily thanked Emily for the hospitality, but she planned to go home. Emily pleaded that Daniel would have wanted her at his funeral, but Victoria retorted that they'd never know what he would have wanted.

Victoria chose an outfit to bury Daniel in, and she envisioned Daniel modeling the suit and her fixing his tie. In her daydream, he questioned what kind of grown man needed help with a tie, and she remarked that he'd soon teach his own son how to do it. She weakly smiled as she held up the suit and stared into the mirror.

David checked on Emily on his way to Daniel's funeral service, and he asked if she was okay. Emily recounted that she'd asked David to tell her what was going on, and he'd said everything would be over soon, but it was part of a larger plan. Emily demanded to know what that plan had been, and David informed her that if the shooting hadn't happened, he'd be heading to Victoria's funeral instead of Daniel's. Emily incredulously realized that David had intended to kill Victoria, and she wondered if he still planned to do so. He said he was going to be late, and he walked out.

At Daniel's funeral, the priest recited a prayer as the pallbearers carried the coffin to the cemetery plot. A small group of friends and family gathered, and Emily watched from a distance. She flashed back to meeting Daniel for the first time and some of the happy moments they'd shared. As Daniel's loved ones placed flowers on the casket, Emily walked away, and Victoria and Margaux embraced and cried. David told Victoria to take her time, and Louise remarked to Victoria that it had been a beautiful service.

Louise revealed that she'd found the envelope Victoria had been looking for, but Victoria decided she didn't want it. Victoria requested that Louise destroy it in the hope there would be no more funerals. Nolan approached David and apologized for the timing, but he'd just heard there had been a bloodbath in Miami, and an unidentified arms dealer had turned up dead and in pieces. David commented that some people would sleep well that night.

Alvarez informed Ben that Detective Adams had called Ben an asset during the shooting investigation, and he wanted to chat the next day about making Ben a detective. Ben excitedly said he was ready that day, but Alvarez replied that he had to tend to some paperwork first. Alvarez added that Ben's partner had requested some personal days, and Ben found Jack in the locker room and inquired about the time off. Jack admitted that he hadn't been sleeping, and Ben surmised that it had something to do with Kate. Jack claimed that she'd left town after the party, and Ben concluded that Kate had really done a number on Jack.

A car pulled up next to Chief Alvarez, and a man got out and introduced himself as Ted Powell, an FBI agent. Ted said he was trying to track down Kate, and Alvarez reported that she'd been called back to her home office a few days before. Ted asked if Kate had been working with anyone in particular, and Alvarez mentioned Jack's name. Alvarez noticed that Ted's car had no government tags, and he asked what the man's name really was. The man suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed Alvarez, and he identified himself as Malcolm Black before he got back into his car and drove off.
