Revenge recap: Renaissance (September 28, 2014)

As Emily plans to host her most surprising party ever, Victoria finds a way to turn her greatest setback into a dangerous advantage. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them both, David Clarke plans his next move, on the Season 4 Premiere.

Following recap: Disclosure (October 5)

During a group therapy session at the psychiatric facility, Victoria claimed that in the six months since Conrad's death, she'd made peace with the people who had wronged her and those she'd wronged, including Emily. She said that the trauma of seeing her murdered fiancé had led to delusions, but the therapy had set her free. A fellow patient named Phyllis told her to never lose hope, and Dr. Miller remarked to Victoria that it appeared that she'd made a friend. A well-dressed young woman entered and mentioned that she'd left something in her car, but an orderly locked the door and refused to let her leave.

A patient walked around in a common area, holding an open umbrella over her head, and she told Victoria that she'd had a premonition that it was going to rain. Victoria grumbled that she might as well hang herself, and an orderly used the security keypad to enter the room. Phyllis plopped down on the couch next to Victoria and declared that it had worked, and she handed Victoria a cell phone that she'd swiped from the orderly. Phyllis asked how Victoria had known he'd have it on him, and Victoria explained that his wife was due in two weeks. Phyllis crowed that she hadn't had that much fun in years, and the women hugged.

At Grayson Manor, Nolan made suggestions about what Emily could rename the estate, but Emily declared that the house didn't need a name. Nolan mentioned that he'd agreed to co-host her upcoming party, but he hoped her secret plan was to make her debut as Amanda Clarke. She asserted that Emily Thorne deserved a party after what the Graysons had put her through, and Nolan questioned whether there would be any arrests or blackmail attempts at the event. Emily pointed out that Conrad was dead, she'd had Victoria committed, and Daniel was self-destructing, so they could just enjoy the summer. Nolan commented that the girl who had given up revenge had lived happily ever after, but as he walked away, Emily's smile faded.

Later, Emily picked up Nolan from a fitting for his party attire, and she insisted upon driving them home in his new car. He got in, and she put the car in reverse and plowed into the vehicle behind them. A woman ranted that people like them flocked in like they owned the town, and she demanded Emily's insurance information, but Emily said that she'd just cover it. The woman realized that she was talking to Emily Thorne, and she recalled that her customers had been yapping about Emily's party. Emily invited her to drop by the party with an estimate, and the woman agreed. After the woman stormed off, Nolan commended Emily for resolving conflict without a red Sharpie.

Emily and Nolan toasted with a couple named Dennis and Jennifer, and Emily applauded their conservancy efforts with the Southampton Yacht Club. Emily stated that Dennis' new yacht looked like a beauty, and Dennis gushed that he'd named it after his beautiful wife. Jennifer complained that it was embarrassing to have her name painted on a boat, and Nolan asked what had happened to Dennis' last yacht. Dennis explained that it had been involved in an accident with a fishing boat, and a man had been killed.

Emily answered a call on the landline, and a clueless Victoria rambled that she was being held captive. Emily declared that she knew exactly where Victoria was, and Victoria demanded to know what Emily was doing in her house. Emily cheerfully stated that she was paying the mortgage, and she added that she'd changed everything but the phone number. Victoria admitted that she'd hurt Emily, but she noted that Emily had hurt her, too, and she wanted to end the cycle.

Emily snarled that she wanted her childhood and Aiden back, and Victoria countered that she wanted Pascal, but Emily's actions had led to his death. Victoria raged that Emily had insinuated her way into the Grayson family, so Emily had earned her pain, and Emily calmly replied that Victoria's lunatic rants proved that she was exactly where she belonged. Meanwhile, a handful of attendants discovered Victoria, and one approached her with a syringe.

The new patient sobbed as Victoria entered the room, and Victoria remarked that the place didn't deserve her tears. The woman introduced herself as Louise, and Victoria commented that Louise had overpacked. Louise explained that her mother had allegedly arranged for her to go to a health spa, but her mom had been convinced that Louise had been screwed up after Louise's father had drunk himself to death. Victoria said that the place was a prison, and she revealed that it had taken her six months to obtain a phone, but she'd reached the devil who had committed her. Louise wailed that she had to find a way out, or she would lose it in there like her mother wanted, and Victoria eyed Louise's trunk and said that they took everything away there -- so maybe they should let them.

Later, an orderly carried away Louise's luggage, and Louise begged them not to take away her private property. A guard held her back, and the orderly punched in a security code and wheeled Louise's trunk into a locked room. Once the door closed, the trunk opened, and Phyllis crawled out. Phyllis set off the fire alarm, and the water sprinklers turned on overhead. Phyllis laughed maniacally from behind the door, and the patients began screaming that there was a fire. The woman with the umbrella handed it to Victoria, who sauntered to the exit in the chaos.

In a remote cabin, a man asked David if he was going somewhere, and David replied that it was time. The man wondered if David was sure, and David said that he would find a way to repay him. The men shook hands, and the man asked where David was headed. David answered that he had unfinished business in Southampton.

At a photo shoot, a model greeted Daniel with a kiss, and Margaux grumbled that she'd send him the bill for the overtime. Daniel instructed her to send it to a posh hotel, and Margaux surmised that he was trying to salvage his Grayson lifestyle. He claimed that he had profited from his family's downfall, and she blasted him for quitting as her second in command with no warning or explanation. She lectured that he should be fighting to rebuild his life, but he told her to save her concern for her brother. Margaux said that she could handle Gideon, and Daniel zoomed off in a flashy sports car.

In the locker room, a cop asked if Jack, who had just joined the police force, wanted to throw back a few beers, but Jack said that he had to pick up Carl. Jack grumbled that he felt "green as hell," but his partner, Ben, advised him to remember why he'd become a cop. Jack explained that his bar had been doing okay, but it hadn't been enough for a college fund. Jack added that he'd seen too many people get away with murder, and he'd wanted the power to do something about it. Ben teased him for wanting to be the guy arresting people rather than being detained for kidnapping, and Jack worried that he would never live the transgression down.

Jack found Charlotte playing with Carl at the Stowaway, and he scolded her for picking the tot up at daycare when they hadn't talked in six months. Charlotte cooed that she'd missed her nephew, but Jack lectured that he hadn't known where to find his son. Charlotte taunted that fear created a knot in one's stomach, and she said that she'd wanted to remind him of who he was on his first day on the job. Jack swore that he hadn't been the person who had kidnapped her, but she dared him to look her in the eye and say it. Jack implored her to let it go, but she expressed sympathy that poor Carl was being raised by a dirty cop.

Jack, in uniform, stopped by to see Emily, and she joked that he didn't look anything like a stripper. She assured him that he didn't have to keep checking on her, and he informed her that Charlotte had taken Carl from daycare to scare Jack. He said that he'd first thought about joining the force after Amanda's murder and again after Declan had been killed, and Emily asked why he hadn't done it earlier. Jack replied that he'd learned who Emily really was, and he'd known that Emily had been working for the greater good, even if he hadn't agreed with her methods, but he was just glad that she was moving on. Emily said that she'd stayed for Charlotte, and she promised that she would make things better.

Emily stood on the Grayson balcony and looked down at her beach house. She flashed back to kissing Aiden and telling him not to disappear on her again, and he'd vowed that he wouldn't. She walked down to the beach house and used a key to open the door, and she had a memory flash of finding Aiden's body in front of the fireplace. She quickly closed up the house, and after she left, David emerged from the shadows.

Daniel asked if Charlotte had heard from their mother, and Charlotte bitterly replied that she'd received a postcard from Amsterdam after Victoria had ditched them. Daniel pointed out that the government had taken everything, and Victoria had been the first rat off the ship. Charlotte noted that he still had the money from Lemarchal, and she asked him to cover her rent. He objected to her living alone downtown, and he asked her to move in with him, but she insisted that she was doing fine. Charlotte mentioned that Emily had had the gall to invite her to a Memorial Day party, and Daniel agreed to pay Charlotte's pricey rent.

Daniel met with a man who was interested in buying his car, and the man asked why Daniel was letting the vehicle go. Daniel quipped that there were things in life more important than pretending to be James Bond, and the man speculated that Daniel was selling everything in an effort to pretend his fortune hadn't sunk along with the rest of the Grayson family's. The man handed Daniel a check, and Daniel griped that it wasn't the amount they'd agreed on, but the man asserted that Daniel's name didn't intimidate him. Daniel growled that if he read about himself or his family in a tabloid, the man would see how threatening Daniel could be, and the man drove away in Daniel's car.

At the Memorial Day party, Emily overlooked the room from upstairs, and she smiled when she saw Nancy, the woman whose car she'd damaged, arrive. Emily approached Nancy and handed her a check, but Nancy protested that it was too much. Emily said that it was to cover the hassle, and Nancy apologized for blowing up, but she'd learned to expect the worst from people ever since she'd lost her fiancé. Emily confided that she'd lost someone, too, and it was hard to find someone who understood. Emily asked Nancy to stay, and Nancy agreed.

Nolan made an elaborate entrance while being carried in by attendants, and he announced that the new queen of the Hamptons needed a throne, but fortunately, she had room for a jester. Charlotte griped to Gideon that Emily and Nolan were rubbing her nose in all that had happened, and Gideon suggested that they rub their noses in something more fun. Charlotte insisted upon saying hello to the hostess first, and Emily thanked her for being there. Charlotte growled that her mother had been right, and all Emily had ever wanted had been the lifestyle and the house. Emily asked for a chance to explain, but Charlotte snapped that when Emily wanted something, she just took it.

Jennifer gasped when she spotted Nancy, and Emily asked if Jennifer was all right. Jennifer claimed she was nervous, and Emily handed her another glass of champagne. Emily approached Margaux and thanked her for accepting the invitation, and Margaux disclosed that she was covering all the local parties, but it was interesting to see how thoroughly Emily had erased Victoria from the mansion. Emily explained that she'd wanted to forget as much of the past as possible, and Margaux regretted letting Daniel color her opinion of Emily.

Jack and Ben arrived, and Ben said that he felt like he'd died and gone to Billy Joel's house. Ben wondered how Jack had scored an invitation, and Jack pointed to Emily. Ben asked if something was going on between them, and Jack replied that it was complicated. Ben advised him to "uncomplicate it" because she was hot, and Jack offered to show him the rest of the house. They stumbled upon Gideon calling to Charlotte to take her shot on the pool table, but she was snorting cocaine on the terrace.

Ben started to arrest Charlotte, but Jack stepped in to handle it. Ben contended that Jack couldn't protect Charlotte if he looked the other way, but Jack said that Charlotte was family, and Ben allowed him one pass. Jack blasted Charlotte for shooting lines, and Gideon called Ben a "jackass." Jack slammed Gideon up against the wall and threatened to nab him if he gave so much as an aspirin to Charlotte, and he doused the remaining cocaine with his drink. Jack ordered the couple to leave.

Nolan caught up with Jack and requested an introduction to Jack's partner, but Jack said Ben had left after catching Charlotte doing blow with Gideon. Jack worried that Gideon was a bad influence, and Nolan said that he'd worked with Gideon, who he considered to be "two parts Madoff, one part Manson." Jack said that he should be the one person Charlotte could depend on, but he might be booking her by the end of the summer.

Margaux warned Nolan that she might poach his guest list for her next mixer, and he asked if she'd known that Gideon had attended the party with Charlotte. Nolan thought it was an interesting choice for Gideon to go after Daniel's sister, especially since Charlotte had done a stint in rehab after an overdose. Margaux was surprised, and Nolan wondered what Gideon wanted with Charlotte. Margaux called Gideon a man of his own volition, and Nolan confessed that he was succumbing to idle gossip, but he was curious about what Daniel would say if she asked him about his night with the redhead.

Emily addressed her guests, and she said that she'd heard the whispers about her buying the house after what Conrad had done, but she was an optimist, and she'd seen an opportunity to take something dark and breathe new life into it. She credited her guests by helping with their generous donations, and she handed Dennis a bottle of champagne to christen his yacht, which had been hauled onto the property. Dennis wished everyone a happy Memorial Day, and he announced that he'd named his new boat after the love of life, who had been his anchor when he'd been adrift. He removed the tarp to reveal the boat's name, and the name Valerie was prominently displayed on the stern. Jennifer exclaimed that he'd named it after his mistress, and she slugged Dennis.

Dennis insisted that someone had painted the wrong name, but Jennifer stared at Nancy, and she announced that Dennis had been the one who'd killed Nancy's fiancé. Nolan realized that Emily had set up the act of retaliation, and Emily chased after a fleeing Nancy and claimed that she hadn't known Nancy's fiancé had been the one Dennis had killed. Nancy said that it had felt good to get upset about something trivial when Emily had hit her car, since she hadn't been able to feel anything but hatred, and she'd gotten sick of hating. Emily said that Dennis would be charged, but Nancy expected him to hire fancy lawyers to fight it, while she relived the worst day of her life over and over again. Nancy cried that even if Dennis was found guilty, they'd never get back the people they'd loved.

After the guests had departed, Nolan asked if Emily had expected Nancy's gratitude, and she slammed a door in his face. He recalled that he'd been there from the beginning of her quest, but she'd shut him out, just like she was then. He said that she was scaring him, and he thought that it was time for an intervention to force her to be who she really was. Nolan contemplated what would happen if he told everyone Amanda was alive and well, and Emily bellowed that the Graysons had killed everyone she'd loved and had left her with nothing. She ordered him to get out.

Margaux sought out Daniel at his hotel and asked why he'd really stepped down, and she urged him to tell her about the redhead. Daniel recalled that Margaux had canceled when he'd invited her to meet him at a hotel, and he'd ended up partying with a redheaded girl who had passed out. He continued that when he'd woken up, he'd discovered the girl had overdosed, and he'd only been able to think about what it would have done to his name and their company, so he'd taken care of it.

Margaux demanded to know what role Gideon had played, and Daniel revealed that Gideon had taken photos to force him out of Lemarchal. Daniel swore that he'd wanted to protect Margaux from his mistakes, but he'd panicked instead of calling the cops, and she imagined that had been what Gideon had counted on. Margaux said that they had to do something, and Daniel declared that he was done with it, but Margaux divulged that Gideon was with Charlotte.

As Charlotte indulged in more cocaine, Gideon told her to leave some for him. Charlotte groused that Jack had ruined the rest of their stash, and she thought Jack considered himself to be untouchable. Gideon pulled her into bed and said that no one was untouchable, and they kissed.

Nolan returned Emily's call, and she apologized for not being honest earlier. She explained that she had empathized with Nancy, and she'd wanted to protect Nancy from becoming like her, but no one was like her. Nolan called Emily a "unique, bloodthirsty snowflake," and Emily said that the thirst had become a part of her. She added that she didn't know who she was without it, and she wasn't sure she wanted to find out. The doorbell rang, and Emily said she'd call Nolan back.

Emily found Victoria at the door, and Victoria sarcastically complained that Emily hadn't invited her to the party. Emily asked how Victoria had gotten out, and Victoria replied that she'd done so with the help from a friend, since nothing bonded people like time in prison. Victoria added that she knew how Emily had felt when she'd returned to the Hamptons with an enormous amount of hate in her heart, but Emily had chosen revenge over telling the truth and reuniting with her sister. Victoria declared that it was her turn, and Emily coolly welcomed her back and shut the door in her face.

As Victoria began to leave, David grabbed her and clasped his hand over her mouth. She cried out as he placed a rag over her face, and she slipped into unconsciousness.
