The mysterious low-key tricks of manipulation of Helen Mirren’s Maeve Harrigan finally float over the surface with shocking significances, insinuating that a long-standing betrayal is at play.

As war with the Stevensons builds up, Maeve’s loyalty to the Harrigans — or the lack thereof — increases the stakes, suggesting that her true motive might just involve ripping the family to shreds from within.

Maeve makes a fatal move in MobLand

Episode 6 of MobLand places Maeve as the most threatening and chancy player in the ever-expanding turf war.

Her own choice to ring up Richie Stevenson and give away the location of Seraphina and Brendan in Antwerp isn’t just strategic — it’s also deeply personal. Both Harry and Kevin had made an effort to steer the Harrigans away from war, but Maeve’s planning of conflict now leaves no uncertainty about her true motivations. Maeve tells Richie,

“Do whatever you want with Seraphina…but leave Brendan alive”.

This scene is the sharpest hint yet, indicative of Maeve’s actual priorities. It’s not just a clear-cut move. It’s revenge.

Seraphina is Conrad’s illicit daughter — a living and breathing token of his adultery — and Maeve’s disparagement for her is profound. In contrast, she sees Brendan as faithful, even worth shielding, despite endangering his life as collateral. Maeve’s duplicity wasn’t brash — it was very well calculated.

The timing? Well, that was all perfect from her viewpoint: Seraphina and Brendan, far from the Cotswolds and discussing a ruby deal in Antwerp, were exposed.

Maeve’s disclosure to Richie guaranteed that the cartel now has both of them under its thumb. Her firmness on sparing Brendan wasn’t out of the purest of concerns — it was strategy. She wanted Seraphina’s death to push Conrad all over the edge. After all, Maeve has frequently reminded Conrad that he's no longer “Conrad the Dread,” mocking him into peeling off whatever moral limitation he has left.

The Harrigans unravel as MobLand barrels toward chaos

While at the Harrigan estate in MobLand, Maeve’s calculative mind doesn’t show signs of slowing down. She refers to both Seraphina and Brendan as “weak links,” proving that even Brendan’s shield is conditional.

Eddie, Maeve’s grandson who is her trustworthy person, hears her lay out the plan directly, strengthening the idea that this treachery was not a done just within a moment of weakness — it was strategy.

In the meantime, Conrad grows progressively unstable. After murdering his friend Archie Hammond, based on an unverified idea — a seed carefully planted and watered by Maeve — his terror has become critical.

In recent episodes of MobLand, Conrad trails Jan Da Souza and behaves improperly around her teenage daughter, Gina, which only further draws a picture of a man disentangling fast. The call to Richie in Episode 6 was unhinged as well, but in the eyes of Maeve? It’s a sign her influence is working like a charm.

And now, on the other hand, Seraphina corroborates that she’s not going to be an easy person to target. In Antwerp, she outwits the shady ruby dealers and calls in Lorenzo to deal with the security.

Her condition — no cash and deposit upfront — is accepted, and she leverages this deal to demand 90% of the profits. Brendan, who is impatient to prove his importance, agrees.

The episode puts forward the idea that Seraphina is a character far from weak and that this strength might just maybe interrupt Maeve’s careful plans.

MobLand is slowly starting to peel back the many layers of Maeve Harrigan’s motivations, and episode 6 might be the strongest sign yet that her betrayal is here.

As Maeve influences events to throw Conrad off the throne, the Harrigans are moving towards self-destruction. Whether she comes out being victorious or burns with the rest of them still remains to be seen.
