Galen Gering (Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald) and McKenzie Westmore (Sheridan Crane) dominated the nominations phase of this year's Dankies. The pair racked up a combined seven nominations. Gering earned nods in the Outstanding Leading Actor and Most Attractive Actor categories while Westmore took nominations as Outstanding Leading Actress and Outstanding Overall Performer.
Robin Strasser (Hecuba) and Juliet Mills (Tabitha Lenox), Harmony's resident witches, grabbed a handful of nominations. Strasser earned a spot as Outstanding Recurring Role or Special Guest and also a nomination for One Life to Live's Most Missed Performer, where she played Dorian Lord. The bewitching storylines were featured in most of the storyline categories.
There were some oddities in the nominations. In the Outstanding Recurring Character or Special Guest, Andrea Evans and Maureen McCormick were both nominated for playing the same role -- Rebecca Hotchkiss. McCormick vacated the role after a planned several-week run. Evans then took over the role. McCormick also earned a nod as Most Missed Performer. Another oddity is Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald's double nominations as Favorite and Least Favorite character.
The first phase of the Dankies balloting took place throughout December and part of January. In this phase all Passions Online users were asked to offer their choices for the best of the best of Passions over the past year. These users were allowed to nominate any performer or storyline that they felt fit the various categories. When balloting closed, Soap Opera Central tabulated all of the nominations. The top four vote-getters in each category were placed on a final ballot, a ballot for which voting begins today. Additionally, all 16 nominees in the Outstanding and Supporting Actor and Actress categories were placed in an Outstanding Overall Performer category. Voters are asked to choose which of the nominees turned in the best performance over the past twelve months.
Voting on the final ballot will continue through February 9, 2001. At that time voting will close. On February 12th, the winners of the Dankies will be announced on the Soap Opera Central web site. On February 19th, a special "all soap" edition of the Dankies will be held. In this special balloting, the winners of each of categories in all of the ten soap sections of the Soap Central site will compete against one another. Every user of Soap Opera Central will be eligible to vote in the all soaps ballot.
