Tyler Christopher opts out; Replacement named

General Hospital officials have confirmed that newcomer Coltin Scott will take over the role of Nikolas Cassadine starting in mid-to-late July.

Christopher created the role of Nikolas Cassadine in 1996 and immediately became one of the fans' favorite actors. His character instantly became integral to much of the show's story and his departure is going to felt by by GH. Since joining General Hospital, Christopher he has received numerous awards for his performance including: Outstanding Newcomer for the Soap Opera Digest Awards and Best Newcomer for the Soap Opera Update Awards in 1997. Christopher earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Younger Lead Actor in 1998 and was named one of the 12 Hottest Daytime Stars by TV Guide in 1998.

Although Christopher is leaving daytime, don't expect him to be out of work for long. He will star in the play STARFIRE with GH alum -- and current and love interest -- Vanessa Marcil. Christopher is also rumored to have landed a role in an upcoming feature film.

Leaving General Hospital is apparently a tough decision for Tyler. He was quoted as saying, that he was "happy at GH and [...] would consider coming back someday." His last airdate is not available at this time.
