General Hospital's Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma Drake) was blessed with a huge outpouring of love from Port Charles fans upon her recent exit from the ABC soap, and now she's receiving love from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, having landed an Outstanding Younger Actress nomination in this year's Daytime Emmy Awards race. As one can imagine, the GH youngster is over the moon -- but she also tells soapcentral.com she's in a bit of shock.
soapcentral.com: Hi Brooklyn! How are you?
Brooklyn Rae Silzer: I'm amazing, thank you!
soapcentral.com: Oh, I'll bet! Congratulations on your nomination.
Silzer: Thank you so much. It is such an honor. I'm so shocked.
soapcentral.com: How did you react when you found out you'd been nominated for an Emmy? That's such big news!
Silzer: Well, I was at school, and at the end of the day, when I got outside after school was over, I saw balloons everywhere, and my mom told me, "You were nominated for the Emmys!" And we jumped and screamed and she hugged me, and we took a ton of photos. I was so shocked, and Frank [Valentini, our executive producer] was like, "Aaaaggghhh!!'
soapcentral.com: I love how your mom showed up at your school and surprised you with balloons. That sounds really special.
Silzer: I was doing math before that. School comes first and then the Emmys!
soapcentral.com: But was it hard to concentrate on school when you knew the nominations were coming out?
Silzer: Well, kind of. I knew about it a little bit. But I wasn't worrying about it or anything. It would be cool if I got it, and then it came true, so it all worked out.
soapcentral.com: Who was the first person you wanted to tell? Your mom knew, but who else were you excited to share the news with?
Silzer: Well, I wanted to tell Jason, because I wouldn't have gotten the nomination without him. He's the best acting coach ever, and he gave me tips. The scenes that I submitted were with him, and he's a really good actor. He helps me be a good actor, too. And he told me, in the scenes, to get my emotions from my gut, and it turned out to be really good. And it was a really special moment, because at that time, I knew that he was going to go, so that's what I put in my head. And I knew that he believed in me, and I believed in myself. And I wanted to make them special scenes for the fans, for him and for me, of course. And so yeah, they turned out really good, and I ended up being a nominee. It's been a really amazing adventure so far.
soapcentral.com: Have you checked out your competition in your category yet?
Silzer: No, I haven't [laughs], but Finola [Hughes, Anna Devane] got nominated, which is cool.
soapcentral.com: I know you just found out you got nominated, but have you thought about what you might wear to the event?
Silzer: No, not yet. But probably something really fancy and poufy with a really pretty headband with jewels or something like that. Anything I can imagine!
soapcentral.com: Do you get nervous before work events like this, or is it more exciting?
Silzer: Well, definitely more exciting, but I haven't been to an event as big as this, because I've never been nominated for an Emmy before, which is really awesome. And I'm just really excited that I got nominated, and it's going to be really cool to be there.
soapcentral.com: You recently returned to General Hospital, which your fans loved. Is that something you'd like to do again?
Silzer: Oh, yes, of course. Everyone is so nice there, and maybe they can write me a few more stories in. I always have to visit my grandma Anna! She's going to miss me. Maybe I can live there for a long time, like it's my house!
soapcentral.com: Well, hopefully! Your fans are so supportive of you. How did it make you feel, when the news came out that you and Jason were leaving, that the fans gave you both so much love and support?
Silzer: Well, my mommy told me some of the things that the fans said, and it just made me cry, because they're really sweet in how they want me to stay on. It's been an amazing journey, and I want it to keep on going -- and that's possible! And I'm thankful that they want that to.
