Anthony Geary About the only category not to feature any new faces was the Outstanding Lead Actor category. Year after year, there are five men that stand out from the rest of the pack. This year was no different. All My Children's David Canary (Adam and Stuart Chandler), One Life to Live's Robert S. Woods (Bo Buchanan), General Hospital's Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer), and The Young and the Restless' Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) and Peter Bergman (Jack Abbott) were all also on the ballot last year. For the second straight year, Anthony Geary was presented with the Emmy award.

It's been 25 years since Susan Flannery received a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress. In 1975, she won for portraying Dr. Laura Horton on Days of our Lives. This year, she was graced with a second award for her work as Stephanie Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful. This marked the first time that a performer from The Bold and the Beautiful has won the Outstanding Lead Actress award. Other nominees included previous winners Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor, The Young and the Restless), Finola Hughes (Alexandra Devane, All My Children), Hillary B. Smith (Nora Buchanan, One Life to Live), and Jess Walton (Jill Abbott, The Young and the Restless).

One of the longest streaks in awards history continued, as All My Children picked up its 25th consecutive nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. One Life to Live, also a nominee, has never won in this category. The winner on the night was General Hospital, winning its 7th award, more than any other program in Daytime Emmy history. General Hospital previously won in 1981, 1984, 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999.

As the evening closed, only three daytime dramas took home awards --- The Young and the Restless with 4, General Hospital also with 4 and The Bold and the Beautiful win 1. In total eight soaps were nominated for awards. Missing from the balloting was Another World, which ended its run in June of 1999, Passions, which debuted in the summer of 1999, Guiding Light and Port Charles.
