Days of our Lives viewers were over the moon when it was confirmed earlier this spring that Freddie Smith would be reprising his role as Justin and Adrienne's son, Sonny, but questions have still lingered as to what fans can expect once he returns to the canvas this July. Will his return be brief, like when Sonny came back for Will's funeral last fall? Or might he be sticking around long term this time around? Lucky for fans of the Emmy winner, it seems he's here to stay.
According to Smith's Facebook fan page, the actor has signed a contract with the NBC soap. “We are so excited that Freddie is now able to announce that he is back at #Days on contract,” the most recent post states.
As for what storyline may be headed Sonny's way, it won't be all sunshine and roses. But it might be partly roses. “Sonny returns to Salem to help his family through tough times and his relationship with Paul [Christopher Sean] grows,” DAYS executive producer Ken Corday teases in the new issue of Soap Opera Digest. “Paul will be coming more to the foreground with Sonny back in town.”
Smith's last appearance in Salem was in late 2015 for the funeral of his husband, Will (Guy Wilson), who was murdered by the Necktie Killer (Rob Scott Wilson's Ben Weston). As fans may recall, it was revealed that Sonny and Paul already have a romantic history -- so it wouldn't be a surprise if the two decided to explore the chemistry they might have today.
