Days of our Lives' Galen Gering (Rafe Hernandez) opens up about how his alter ego plans to win back Hope (Kristian Alfonso) and his thoughts on the possibility that the show's writers don't care so much for the character he's played the last eight years.

The term "unlucky in love" is an understatement when it comes to the romantic fortune of Days of our Lives' Rafe Hernandez. The down-on-his-luck character, played by heartthrob Galen Gering, hasn't caught a break with women since arriving in Salem back in 2008. And his bad luck streak continued when he recently caught his new flame, Hope (Kristian Alfonso), kissing her husband, Aiden (Daniel Cosgrove), who was supposedly killed last year.

"Life sucks for Rafe!" Gering shared with TV Insider. "But you gotta root for the guy, right? He keeps getting beaten down but gets back up and always tries to do the right thing... Now that we know Aiden didn't die but was kidnapped by the evil DiMera family, how can Rafe not give Aiden and Hope a chance to get back together and see where things stand? That doesn't mean his mind doesn't automatically go to the worst place possible. When Rafe saw them kissing, it confirmed his worst fears."

However, the actor isn't so sure Hope and Aiden have a good shot at happiness. “This is pretty messy. Rafe has never trusted Aiden, and, while Aiden was gone, his son raped Hope's daughter, so this may not work out for them after all,” he previews. “We're shooting some stuff now, which won't air for months, where Rafe and Hope can potentially move forward together. But, for now, Rafe will stay patient. He's like, ‘Do what you gotta do, Hope. I'm here. I love you.' In a way, he feels for Aiden. Don't forget, Rafe was also tortured by the DiMeras.”

And speaking of torture, it may seem to some that the writers over at DAYS don't particularly care for Rafe, considering some of the not-so-fortunate material they've penned for the character. Prime example: the near-year-long coma the cop endured not so long ago. “I was in that coma for 75 percent of a year!” Gering jokes. “Every time I'd go up to the office to try to talk about it, they'd say, ‘We're working on something for you.' A month later, I'd go back and say, ‘So, how's that new story coming?' And they'd say, ‘Great! Don't worry!' And the coma would continue. I could just see myself rolling into the office in my wheelchair at age 92 still going, ‘So...anything for me yet?' But, hey, Rafe now has a whole family of his own, so things worked out.”
