Report: Alison Sweeney could leave Days of our Lives

As DAYS fans continue to celebrate the show's two-year renewal, there is a bit of sobering news making the rounds that could temper the celebration. A published report states that fan-favorite Alison Sweeney could be exiting the show in the weeks ahead.

In a seemingly unthinkable scenario for Days of our Lives fans, a published report hints that long-time DAYS vet Alison Sweeney (Samantha Brady) could be exiting the show. The actress is at the end of her current contract, and a published report hints that Sweeney might be on her way out. However, Soap Central has learned that the actress and show execs have apparently come to terms on a new deal.

"She considers DAYS her family and has had a great 17-plus years with the show, but at the end of the day, the deal has to make sense," Soap Opera Digest reported in its November 23 edition, citing an unnamed show source.

However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Ken Corday revealed that Sweeney has reupped with the show.

"She's a very smart cookie. She realizes that she came in on the show when she was 16. It's not that she owes us anything, but this is where her bread was buttered for a long time," Corday explained. "This is her fan base. So perhaps the day will come when she's the star of her own show, but perhaps, hopefully, on NBC. But it's great that she has these forays out on The Biggest Loser. She's smart. She still knows this is home for her, and we just recently re-signed with her.

"I remember my first day at work. I was so excited to be a part of a show that I'd been a fan of," Sweeney recounted excitedly in an interview with Soap Central last year. "I even remember my audition. My first two weeks on the show I was sneaking around Salem, so there weren't a lot of lines to memorize. My first scene was with Wayne Northrop (then-Roman Brady), who pulled a gun on me and said something like 'Freeze or I'll shoot!'"

In addition to her daytime work, Sweeney's plate is also full with responsibilities from a job in primetime. Since March 2007, Sweeney has been serving as host of NBC's hit weight loss reality series, The Biggest Loser.

In related contract news, a labor dispute has shut down production of The Biggest Loser, according to the Los Angeles Times. Crew members walked off the set last week after producers of the reality series rejected the crew's efforts to unionize and join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

Sweeney has called Days of our Lives home since 1992. Her first on-air appearance as Sami was broadcast in January 1993.
