Greg Vaughan on his return to Days of our Lives: Eric will help storylines "go in new directions"

Days of our Lives' Greg Vaughan will be in and right back out of Salem, with Eric Brady's short return meant to send storylines spinning in different directions. But will Eric come back after the dust settles?

Any Days of our Lives fans who were looking forward to Greg Vaughan returning and shaking up the canvas as Eric Brady won't want to miss a second of the NBC soap opera, because he's back now -- but sadly, not for very long.

The fan-favorite actor returned to Salem this week just in time for Eric to celebrate his one-year wedding anniversary with Nicole (Arianne Zucker), but the happy milestone in their relationship will soon be followed by a sour ending: the bombshell reveal that Nicole slept with Xander (Paul Telfer) while he's been busy working in Africa. That moment, says the actor, will have Eric snatching up his unpacked bags and hightailing it back to where he came from.

"[Eric] is just grabbing hold of his nearest and dearest and his heart and soul and not letting go. He is just trying to hold on as long as he can until he has to return, knowing his visit is short," Vaughan teases to Soap Opera Digest. "So, it's not the quantity of time, it's the quality of time that's important. You come to town, you want to see everyone that's important in your life, and I think he accomplishes that. Unfortunately he becomes aware of something unexpected, which drives a wedge."

Though his return home will be a short one, Vaughan says it's a valuable one, as well. After all, viewers can only take so many scenes of Nicole pining after an off-screen flame.

Explains the actor, "[Co-executive producer Albert Alarr and I] talked it out and he said it was very important for Eric to come back and help reshape some storylines that had been affected by his absence, but also help them to go in new directions."

But will this be the last that fans see of Eric? Fortunately, though DAYS is currently keeping mum about the character's future, Vaughan says he is forever grateful to be connected to DAYS and would welcome future returns in a heartbeat: "Going back and playing in the playground with the same kids, I love it."

In addition to DAYS, Vaughan is known for his 2003 to 2009 run as General Hospital's Lucky Spencer and his 2002 to 2003 run as The Young and the Restless' Diego Guittierez. He has also starred in the primetime series Queen Sugar; Lucifer; Beverly Hills, 90210; Charmed; and Malibu Shores

How do you feel about Greg Vaughan's return to DAYS being a short one? How would you like to see Eric's time in Salem go down? Do you think Eric and Nicole will eventually be able to overcome Nicole's slip-up, even if it's not during this visit? Would you even want Ericole to work things out?
