The instant the news hit that Vincent Irizarry would be departing his role as Days of our Lives' Deimos Kiriakis, All My Children fans began buzzing about the possibility of the actor resurrecting his former Pine Valley alter ego, David Hayward, on General Hospital. And while execs at the ABC soap ultimately decide what's right for the series, Irizarry agrees that David Hayward, whom he played from 1997 to 2013, would be a perfect fit in Port Charles.
As ABC soap fans may recall, actress Finola Hughes appeared on AMC as both GH's Anna and Anna's twin sister, Alex. During Hughes's stint in Pine Valley, Anna fell in love with Irizarry's David, and the two characters had a daughter together (named Leora, who ultimately died). Considering the story potential that could come along with the two characters reuniting, fans have been begging for Irizarry to show up in Port Charles.
"[Fans are] very vocal about it on Twitter and Facebook," Irizarry shares with Soap Opera Digest. "I loved working with Finola. I loved the characters. They were great characters together. That's their show, whatever they decide to do, obviously. I have no control about what they decide to do. But if you're asking me my feelings about it, I would love to work with Finola again. I would love playing David Hayward again, especially where David is concerned, only because of how it was left off, with All My Children going off the air. There was absolutely no closure at all. It just stopped, after forty one years, because we kept thinking we were coming back. So the stories stopped, as it was, frozen in time. There was no resolution with the characters. So at least for me, and the audience, where character is concerned, if that availed itself, if I had the opportunity to do that, it could potentially give something to the character, and to the show, and to the audience."
He continues: "[David] is a doctor, and it's General Hospital, and considering that he had a child with Anna, considering the fact that he is a doctor -- and not just any doctor, but a world-renowned cardiologist, thank you [laughs] -- I could see that it would be an easy fit. But again, it's their show and they get to decide what they're going to do for whatever would be best for their show."
